Seven Sheriff’s Offices Receive $350,000 in Grant Funding to Increase Litter Removal Cycles

BATON ROUGE, La. – Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) and Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser are pleased to announce the 2024-2025 grants for local sheriff’s departments. In total, $350,000 was distributed to sheriff’s offices in CameronEast FelicianaJacksonLincolnLivingstonSt. Helena, and Winn Parishes. This grant is designed to support sheriffs’ efforts to increase litter removal cycles.

“Louisiana Sheriffs’ Departments are stepping up and prioritizing litter,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “This grant supports them in their cleanup efforts, and we look forward to seeing positive results from their hard work.”

“Litter begets litter,” said Susan Russell, KLB Executive Director. “Research shows a littered site invites more litter, and a clean site deters it. The sheriffs’ grant program supports our sheriffs in their efforts to increase roadside litter removal.”

The sheriff’s grant program funds litter abatement vehicles and trailers, carts, safety signage, surveillance cameras, and supplies for litter clean up.

According to KLB’s 2023 litter study, there are 143.8 million pieces of litter on Louisiana’s roadways. Interstates are the most littered type of roadway, with an average of 10,178 pieces of litter per mile.
