Keep Louisiana Beautiful Names Jonathan Brown, Sustainability Coordinator at UL Lafayette, the New Co-Chair of the KLB University Sustainability Coalition

(MANDEVILLE, LA) – Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) has selected Jonathan R. Brown, Sustainability Coordinator at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, as the new Co-Chair of the KLB University Sustainability Coalition. Jonathan will serve in this role for two years, with support from current Co-Chair Jordan Stewart, Sustainability Director at Tulane University. The KLB University Sustainability Coalition is a network of colleges and universities with an interest in increasing higher education sustainability efforts in Louisiana.

Jonathan has served in higher education for over six years at UL Lafayette, working in student affairs for four years before moving to the office of sustainability. As Sustainability Coordinator, Jonathan engages with student groups and campus departments to provide sustainability education, implement sustainable initiatives, manage hazardous waste collection and disposal, coordinate plastic bag and film recycling, and manage the campus zero waste campaign. Jonathan has worked for UL Lafayette since the fall of 2017. He has a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Louisiana State University and a master’s degree in student affairs in higher education from Northwestern State University of Louisiana.

“Jonathan is an outstanding leader, friend, and mentor for those involved in the Coalition,” says Cabell Mouton, Community Engagement and Affiliate Services Director. “We are so proud of him for taking on this leadership role and know that he will help grow sustainability in higher ed across our state.”

As Co-Chair, Jonathan will plan the Coalition’s annual meeting schedule, identify and coordinate meeting topics and presentations, serve as spokesperson for the Coalition, assist in seeking new Coalition members, and engage students in Coalition meetings and activities.

Virtual Coalition meetings occur monthly and are open to higher education faculty, administration, and students. Coalition meetings allow for networking and the exchange of ideas. Meeting topics include subjects of interest like sustainable campus dining practices, game-day waste reduction, and how to conduct a greener move-out. The Coalition meets in person once a year at the KLB State Conference.

The Coalition was created to complement the KLB University Affiliate program, which was developed in 2021 in response to a growing interest in sustainability, waste reduction, and litter prevention at the university level. KLB Affiliation status is not required to join the Coalition.

The Coalition includes representation from 14 colleges and universities: Dillard University, Fletcher, Technical Community College, Grambling State University, Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech, Loyola University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, River Parishes Community College, Tulane University, University of Louisiana Lafayette, University of Louisiana Monroe, University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of Louisiana
