Love Our Waterways

Launching September 2026

Keep Louisiana Beautiful will launch Love Our Waterways, a month-long waterway cleanup, in September 2026. This initiative is born out of the success of Love the Boot Week, our state’s largest litter clean-up and beautification project held each April, which removed 1,467 tons of litter. Let’s bring that momentum to Louisiana’s waterways. We need all boaters to sign up to pick up! Registration opens in May 2026.

The Problem

80% of litter and debris in water begins on land. It makes its way into ditches and streams; it’s carried into our bayous, rivers, and lakes, and eventually into the Gulf of Mexico. With Louisiana being positioned at the mouth of the Mississippi River, we are susceptible to not only the litter generated in our state, but all of the 31 U.S. states that are part of the Mississippi River Watershed — the fourth largest watershed in the world.

How To Help

  • Organize a waterway or shoreline cleanup or volunteer for one.
  • Promote Love Our Waterways on social media to raise awareness.
  • Donate to Keep Louisiana Beautiful so we can support local groups organizing waterway and shoreline cleanups.
