Keep Louisiana Beautiful Introduces New Animated Video Teaching Youth About Litter

BATON ROUGE, La. – Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) and Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser are pleased to share a new animated video created to teach Louisiana’s elementary school students about the harmful effects of litter and how they can help keep their communities clean.

“Louisiana’s future depends on the next generation, and that’s why it’s so important to teach our young people to take pride in their state,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “This new animated video from Keep Louisiana Beautiful makes learning about litter fun and memorable, showing kids that everyone — no matter how young — can be a Leader Against Litter.”

“Keep Louisiana Beautiful strives to provide educators, both formal and non-formal, with the tools they need to teach their students how to be environmental stewards,” said Susan Russell, KLB Executive Director. “The video is a great visual learning tool for defining litter, demonstrating its harmful effects, and providing simple ways to help keep our communities clean and beautiful.”

When youth watch the video, they will be introduced to Rocksey the Raccoon. Rocksey visits her friends, Allie the Alligator, Pete the Pelican, and Timmy the Turtle. Throughout Rocksey’s journey, she sees how litter is hurting her friends and their homes. Rockey and her pals learn that there are simple ways they can help as Leaders Against Litter:

  • Never litter.
  • Put your bagged trash in a trash can and recyclables in a recycling bin.
  • Pick up litter when you see it.
  • Use a reusable water bottle.
  • Keep your truck bed clean.
  • Keep a bag for trash in your car.
  • Tell your friends and grownups how they can help prevent litter.

At the conclusion of the video, students are called to take a pledge to be Leaders Against Litter. This pledge can also be found in KLB’s Litter-Free Louisiana Activity Book – a free resource available at KeepLouisianaBeautiful.org. This engaging 12-page activity book teaches students about environmental stewardship, litter, and recycling. Included are activities that encourage reflection, problem-solving, and creativity.

The KLB youth education webpage also provides a link to the new video and 10 lessons for grades K-5 that align with student standards. The lessons cover the topics of litter prevention, school litter mapping, recycling, reducing, reusing, microplastics, nonpoint source pollution, and watersheds.

All elementary schools, libraries, Scout groups, and other youth organizations are encouraged to utilize this video and other KLB educational resources to teach youth about litter and environmental stewardship.

KLB’s educational video was created by Innovative Advertising in Mandeville, Louisiana.
