Tips for a Litter-Free Summer Road Trip

Planning a summer road trip in Louisiana? Make sure you take the proper precautions to ensure that your road trip is litter-free!

Did you know there are 143.8 million pieces of litter along our roadways at any given time? Motorists are responsible for nearly 79 % of this litter, which pollutes the environment and harms wildlife. When you are on the road this summer, do your part to prevent litter and Let Louisiana Shine!

Here are a few ways you can help:

  1. Bring a Car Litter Bag – Keep a reusable or disposable bag in your vehicle to collect your trash. Trash belongs in a bag, never out the window! Properly dispose of your bag in a trash can.
  2. Use a Portable Ashtray – If you or a passenger smokes, place the butts in a pocket ashtray rather than tossing them on the ground. Cigarette butts are litter when tossed out the window. They pollute the environment, harm wildlife, and can even start wildfires. Please properly dispose of your butts in a trash can.
  3. Keep Your Truck Bed Clean – Got a pickup truck? Make sure your truck bed is clean before you take off. Loose trash easily can blow out and become litter.
  4. Secure Your Load – When your load isn’t secure, items can fall into the roadway and become litter. Fallen items can also cause collisions and even deaths. Secure your load with tarps, nets, tie downs, and/or straps.
  5. Report Littering Hotline: 855‑LA‑LITTER – See someone tossing trash from their car? Note the license plate, make, and model, then report it.
