Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, Keep Louisiana Beautiful Award $183,000 to Local Sheriff’s Offices to Fight Litter

BATON ROUGE, La. – Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) today announced $183,003 in 2025-2026 grant funding to support roadside litter abatement efforts through local sheriff’s offices. Sheriff’s offices in Calcasieu, Vermilion, Vernon, and Washington Parishes will receive grants to create or expand programs that remove litter along highways, streets, and other public areas.

The grants help sheriff’s offices strengthen their clean-up operations by funding vehicles, trailers, carts, safety signage, and essential supplies. Since the program launched in 2022, KLB has awarded more than $1.7 million to sheriffs’ offices across Louisiana to combat litter and support cleaner, safer communities.

“Our parish sheriff’s offices play a vital role in keeping Louisiana’s communities clean and safe,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “These grants give them the tools and resources to tackle litter at the local level, restore pride in our neighborhoods, and inspire every Louisianan to do their part. This work isn’t just about picking up trash – it’s about building a culture of responsibility and protecting the beauty of our state so Louisiana can shine.”

“Litter begets litter,” said Susan Russell, KLB Executive Director. “Research shows a littered site attracts more trash, while a clean site helps prevent it. This grant program supports our sheriffs as they work year-round to increase roadside litter removal and maintain cleaner roadways.”

According to KLB’s 2023 litter study, an estimated 143.8 million pieces of litter are currently on Louisiana roadways. Interstates remain the most heavily affected, with an average of 10,178 pieces of litter per mile.

KLB encourages Louisiana residents to help keep their communities clean by:

  • Using a bag for trash in your car
  • Securing vehicle loads
  • Keeping truck beds clean
  • Reporting littering and illegal dumping to 855-LA-LITTER
