Put the Brakes on Litter

Motorists are the #1 cause of litter found on the side of the road, contributing to 79% of all roadside litterKeep Louisiana Beautiful has partnered with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles to help educate drivers on the harmful impacts of litter.

There are nine possible test questions on the official driver’s license test related to litter. To prepare test takers, the educational video above has been made available to driving academies. The official Louisiana driver’s manual also includes information about roadside litter.

To further educate motorists, signage is made available to each Office of Motor Vehicles in Louisiana. The signage communicates the following best practices for preventing roadside litter:  

  • Use a car litter bag  
  • Use a portable ashtray  
  • Keep your truck bed clean  
  • Secure your load  
  • Report littering to 855-La-Litter 


Educating motorists about the harmful impacts of litter is required by law under Louisiana Administrative Code Title 55.
