Keep Louisiana Beautiful University Affiliates Clean Up Lafitte Greenway Ahead of Super Bowl

NEW ORLEANS – Keep Louisiana Beautiful’s (KLB) five New Orleans area University Affiliates will gather to care for their city ahead of Super Bowl LIX at the Clean Up & Green Up event on Saturday, February 1, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Lafitte Greenway (500 N. Norman Francis Pkwy.). Students, faculty, and staff from Dillard University, Loyola University New Orleans, Tulane University, University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of Louisiana are participating in the effort.

“New Orleans is fortunate to be home to these five environmentally conscious universities,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “These students care about the city and it’s inspirational to see them all work together to clean up and beautify the Lafitte Greenway before the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is a significant event for the city and it’s important to put our best foot forward.”

“This will be the first time these New Orleans area University Affiliates have collaborated on a community improvement project,” said Susan Russell, KLB Executive Director. “This will not only be an opportunity for these neighboring schools to give back to their community but also a time to connect and foster meaningful relationships.”

Volunteers will help with litter clean up, painting, weeding, and graffiti removal at the event. Participants will be identifiable with their matching event t-shirts in the various school colors.

“The Lafitte Greenway is a community-driven linear park connecting the French Quarter, Treme, and Mid-City neighborhoods,” said Jason Neville, Executive Director of the Lafitte Greenway Partnership. “This cleanup with KLB and its University Affiliates will help us continue to beautify and improve this beloved public space in the heart of the city.”

The KLB University Affiliate program, the largest program of its kind in the U.S., was developed in 2021 in response to a growing interest in sustainability, waste reduction, and litter prevention at the university level. University of Louisiana at Lafayette, with Keep Louisiana Beautiful as a sub-recipient, secured a $500,000 five-year EPA Gulf of Mexico Trash-Free Waters Grant to create and launch the program, develop a litter assessment app, develop educational training videos for campus communities, and fund grant opportunities for University Affiliates.

KLB University Affiliates will give back to New Orleans again during KLB’s Love the Boot Week, April 5-13, 2025. Love the Boot Week is Louisiana’s largest litter removal and beautification event, and all University Affiliates are involved. Learn more at LoveTheBoot.org.
