LSU Participates in Football GameDay Recycling Challenge

LSU participated in the Campus Waste to Zero Waste Football GameDay Recycling Challenge, a nationwide competition administered by the National Wildlife Federation to reduce and recycle waste generated at home football games. Competing colleges and universities choose one football game to track and report their waste diversion data and LSU chose the LSU vs. Florida game held on November 11, 2023. With the support of multiple partners such as Coca-Cola United, Cornerstone Chemical Company, and Keep Louisiana Beautiful, LSU was able to secure funding to purchase an additional 80 Clear Stream recycling bins and collaborate with the Osprey Initiative, who provided the logistical resources for recycling bin deployment and monitoring, as well as the collection of recyclables within designated tailgate areas. LSU also partnered with Glass Half Full to repurpose the glass collected for coastal restoration projects.

With the assistance of LSU Student organizations such as Geaux Green, the Student Society of Wetland Scientists, and the Water Brigades, LSU was able to collect additional recyclables within Tiger Stadium as well as on-campus grounds on the morning proceeding the game. All plastic and aluminum material collected was sent directly back into the supply chain, to be turned into new bottles and cans. In total, 1,371 lbs. of additional recyclables were collected.
