Planning & Logistics

  • Cleanup Supplies
    • Supply boxes from KLB:
      • The first 200 groups to register a cleanup on the Love Our Waterways website will be eligible for a free supply box from Keep Louisiana Beautiful, thanks to support from our sponsors.
      • Supply boxes will include a combination of t-shirts, trash bags, and nitrile gloves.
      • The quantities of the contents of your box will be based off the expected size of your group, which will be asked on your cleanup registration form.
    • Suggested additional supplies & where to find them:
      • Libraries that participate in our Get Down & Clean Up program have litter grabbers and trash bags that can be checked out with your library card. Check the list of participating libraires here.

        • Waders or rubber boots
        • Mesh sacks (crawfish, oyster, or potato sacks work well)

    • Bug spray
  • Paddle Boat Rentals

Event organizers are responsible for coordinating the disposal of litter picked up. Make sure to factor waste removal and hauling into your event planning.

  • Dumpster: If you are a business or organization with access to a dumpster, you may be able to utilize this. Have your volunteers drop off their bags next to the dumpster if it is nearby, or have leaders with trucks drive the bags to the dumpster. Don’t forget to count your bags before throwing them in!

  • Hauling: If you have a large amount of garbage collected or no access to a dumpster, you should arrange for hauling. Contact your local government offices to inform them of your cleanup plans. Determine if they can assist you with waste hauling or if you will need to partner with a private hauler. Work with your waste hauler to determine the best locations for volunteers to drop off their bags for pick-up.

  • About Tipping Fees: Landfill operators charge a “tipping fee” to dispose of waste. Occasionally these fees are waived and considered as an in-kind contribution. The fees may be absorbed by the city or waste hauler. You should determine ahead of time the party that will be responsible for incurring this cost.

Event organizers can download, customize, and print this form to use at your event. The form serves as a sign in sheet, liability release, and photo authorization form. Be sure to insert your organization name into the template where applicable before printing.

Youth Education

Litter creates big problems for the water that all plants, animals, and people need to survive. When it rains, rainwater makes puddles and the litter left behind begins to float. It moves along until it flows into the nearest bayou, stream, river, swamp, or canal – these areas are part of a watershed. Big litter that’s easy to see is bad, but even worse is the microlitter (smaller than the size of a Mardi Gras bead—5mm) because it mixes with the water and can never be cleaned up.

Use the materials below with children to teach them how to be Leaders Against Litter.
