Women Making History: Courtney Hornsby

The month of March is Women’s History Month – recognizing and celebrating the vital role of women in American history. Over the next few weeks, Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) will spotlight several amazing women making history here in Louisiana as they work to protect and improve our environment.

Today, we want to uplift KLB board member, Courtney Hornsby, who serves as Chief of Staff for the City of West Monroe, Louisiana under the administration of Mayor Staci Mitchell. Hornsby is a focused leader and passionate volunteer, working diligently so the citizens of her community – including her three children – can experience an exceptional quality of life.

One of the current projects Hornsby is most excited about is the development of the Highland Park Wetland Trails, which opened in February in the heart of the City of West Monroe. Formerly a golf course, Hornsby and her team have been working for several years to convert a portion of the property into a wetland trails area with amenities and recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy.

“We are continuing to work on the project by adding fitness equipment, educational information about the wetlands, and park amenities such as bike racks and a bike repair station,” says Horsnby. “This has truly been a collaborative project that is helping enhance the quality of life for our community.”

Hornsby is also proud of the work being done in Northeast Louisiana through Ouachita Green and Keep West Monroe Beautiful, non-profit organizations focused on protecting the environment, preventing blight, litter abatement, promoting environmental education, and planning and participating in community enhancement projects.

“Courtney is a pillar of her community and passionate advocate for the mission of Keep Louisiana Beautiful,” says Susan Russell, Executive Director of KLB. “Her leadership is exemplarily and we look forward to seeing her vision for a cleaner, greener Louisiana continue to come to fruition.”

Previous to her current role, Hornsby was president of the West Monroe-West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce for six years. She currently serves on the Living Well Foundation and is on the board of directors for United Way of Northeast Louisiana, Ouachita Green, and KLB.

In 2017, Hornsby was honored with KLB’s prestigious 2017 Alice Foster award, in recognition of her efforts in community beautification, litter prevention, waste reduction, and recycling.

Hornsby earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism and master’s degree in English, both from Northwestern State University. She is a graduate of Leadership Ouachita, Leadership Louisiana, and the Delta Leadership Institute. She is married to the Rev. Shawn Hornsby and they have three children – Peyton, Emily,
and Cooper.
