Report Littering & Illegal Dumping

Call 855-LA-Litter to Report

Littering and dumping are illegal. As residents of Louisiana, it is our duty to report violators of our state’s litter laws.  If you witness littering or come across an illegal dumping site, call the state’s litter hotline at 855-LA-Litter or report online.

Stand Up for Louisiana. Report Littering and Illegal Dumping.

If you see someone littering or illegal dumping, report them to 855-LA-LITTER. The following information is needed when reporting:

  • Vehicle make and license plate information
  • Location of offense
  • Photos and/or video, if available

Important Information to Know: When you report littering or illegal dumping, you will need to sign an affidavit, giving your oath that the offense took place. You will be required to testify in court if the person reported wishes to contest the allegations. Enforcement officers will follow up with each report, interview the person who reported, and conduct a thorough investigation. Photos and videos of the act are helpful but not required. Do not use your phone while driving. If you report a dump site, an officer will conduct an in-person investigation.

Louisiana is cracking down on litter with the new law, Act 67.

Act 67  was passed during the 2025 Legislative Session, giving State Park Rangers the jurisdiction to enforce state litter laws anywhere in Louisiana. This new law allows for increased enforcement capacity to hold those who violate state litter laws accountable. If you are found littering or dumping illegally, you will be cited, and you are subject to fines and up to 8 hours in a litter abatement work program. Dumping violations can carry higher fines and additional penalties, depending on the severity of the dumpsite and the damage to the environment.

There are consequences to littering and illegal dumping.

Those convicted of litter violations face first offense fines and community service in a litter abatement work program.

Simple Littering

Simple littering includes trash flying out the back of a pickup truck. For a first violation, a person shall either be fined $150 or given the option to perform eight hours of community service in a litter abatement work program.

Intentional Littering

Intentional littering includes deliberately throwing trash out of a window onto a roadway. Upon first conviction, a person may be fined $500 and sentenced to serve eight hours of community service in a litter abatement work program.

Illegal Dumping and Gross Littering

Illegal dumping includes depositing large amounts of trash into a ditch. For the first offense, a person may be fined $900 and sentenced to serve 16 hours of community service in a litter abatement work program as approved by the court, and may be imprisoned for not more than 30 days. When the offense of gross littering involves the disposal of tires, the offender shall be fined $1,800 and shall be responsible for the cost of removal, transportation, and processing of the tires.
